The following tribute is from Cathryn Hilker, founder of the Cat Ambassador Program.
When the Cat Ambassador Program faltered from the loss of its last cheetah a woman from South Africa Annie Beckhelling called and said to me "Don't Worry Cathryn, I have two cheetahs and I am giving you one." Several months later, Moya arrived at the Cincinnati airport where I first saw him. Even at just 10 months, his regal bearing was obvious. At maturity, he weighed 120 lbs and stood 34 inches at the shoulder. His huge head, his bright intelligent eyes, his every aspect, physical and mental was as cheetah perfect as I have ever seen. He worked every day for over 11 years in our program. Hundred of thousands of school children experienced his elegance as he entered their classrooms. They listened and heard his loud purr.
Commemorating the opening of Northern Kentucky Race Way, Moya set the world record for all land mammals including humans, for the Olympic 100 meter dash. He received world press for this accomplishment. Moya's record stood until broken by his brother Nyana who had remained in South Africa. Moya demonstrated his running ability daily in the Cat Ambassador Programs summer shows for zoo visitors. Last summer he ran daily as our "elder statesman" and just last week he got to run for his last time. He never once let us down.
Moya deeply touched all of us that worked with him. His gentle and gentlemanly demeanor has left a legacy of excellence. Moya died on January 26th during a seizure, a condition he had managed to live with for several years. His yard will seem lonely without him.
To Annie I say thank you for your most precious gift. To Moya I say you served with grace. We Honor You.
