Meerkat Enrichment Activities

Environmental

  1. Den
  2. Elevated walkways
  3. Logs and dead tree trunk with holes
  4. Space for digging tunnels
  5. Sandbox

Food

  1. Live insects (grubs, worms, crickets, grasshoppers)
  2. Burying worms in sandbox
  3. Dead frogs
  4. Dead day-old chicks
  5. Meat with fur
  6. Whole gem squash and corn on the cob
  7. Stuffing meat, raw nuts and fruit in holes and crevices in logs
  8. Feeding meat in box or toilet paper roll
  9. Scattering fruit around enclosure
  10. Foraging in other enclosures

Novel and Sensory

  1. Small plastic ball with pieces of meat inserted in slot
  2. Pine cone stuffed with fruit
  3. Papier-mâché ball with pieces of meat or dry cat food inside
  4. Fresh parsley and coriander
  5. Vanilla cologne sprayed on objects in enclosure
  6. Frozen donkey or horse skin
  7. Switching enclosures with other animals
