Due to the success of the Anatolian Shepherd Guarding Dog Project in South Africa, Cheetah Outreach has taken on the challenge of breeding the Anatolian for placement on South African farms. At this stage we have three breeding females, Melda, Angel and Mercedes, who share their compounds with three sheep (Snap, Crackle and Pop) as a means of socialising them with herd life. The breeding male War Dance joined us in February 2008 from Grootfontein Research Trust.
The pups born will also be sharing their compounds with the sheep, enabling a smooth transition into working farm life.
A huge thank you to Wildlife Warriors Worldwide for sponsorship of the Anatolian Shepherd Guarding Dog pilot in 2005 and the Anatolian Dog Breeding Programme. Without their wonderful help we would not be able to reach forward with this very important and yet simple solution to cheetah management on farms.
