Scheduled Animal Enrichment

Cheetah Outreach has an extensive programme of environmental and behavioural enrichment to improve the well-being of our animals.  A variety of enrichment provided to animals during feeding and throughout the day may be viewed by the public.  A schedule of enrichment for the day is posted on a board at the entrance to the facility.  One of the best times to observe enrichment events is during feeding at 9:30 to 10:00 and between 4:00 and 4:30.  During enrichment events, handlers and volunteers will explain what is being done and why, and talk a little about the animals involved.

Runs

Runs are seasonal (approximately November through April). We normally conduct the runs two days a week starting at 0815, but the days vary from week to week and are dependent on the weather. Booking is required and must be confirmed to ensure the run is scheduled.

Cheetahs are run in our large enclosure on a lure system, similar to what is used for greyhound racing. Please note that though we use our best runners for public viewing, the success of the run depends on the cats on the day.

Public Runs

Public runs cost R80 per person or R210 per person if an adult encounter is included or R300 if a cub encounter is included after the run. Viewing is from a platform outside the running enclosure, which is high enough to give you an unobstructed view. A Cheetah Outreach volunteer will be with you during the run to answer any questions. Weather permitting.

Private Runs

Private runs cost R3000 per group, not exceeding 6 people. Runs are viewed inside the running enclosure. Small children are not allowed. Adult encounter during encounter hours is included. Weather permitting. Booking in advance is required for both public and private runs.

Booking in advance is required for both public and private runs.

Cub Walks

Cub walks are seasonal (November through March or possibly April). The schedule varies from week to week. Walks normally start at 08h00, lasting from 45 minutes to an hour, followed by an encounter with the cubs. Cost is R750 per person with a maximum of 4 people per walk. Cub walks must be booked in advanced. If you are interested, contact Cheetah Outreach to book.

You will have the opportunity to walk along and take photos while the handlers take the cubs for a walk around the facility grounds at Paardevlei. Handlers will at all times have control of the leads and no guests will be allowed to walk a cub themselves due to safety protocol. When and if the cubs settle, and at the discretion of the handlers, you may have the opportunity to stroke the cubs while on the walk. On return to their enclosure, you will have an encounter with the cubs.

Booking is essential for cub walks.

Private Functions

A private meeting with a cheetah is available on request and must be booked in advance. This type of encounter is tailored for groups. With groups of 60 to 70 people, all guests will have an opportunity to stroke the cat and take photos. For groups over 100, there is a presentation only, with the VIP members of the group having the opportunity to stroke the cat and take photos.

Functions last approximately 30 minutes, depending on the size of the group, and behaviour of the group and cat. Cost is R4200 for a day or night function at the Cheetah Outreach facility.

Off-site functions are available on request and subject to site inspection. Costs for off-site functions:

R6400 for one cheetah
R9000 for two cheetahs in same area
R10500 for two cheetahs in separate areas
